Dina Brodsky was born in Minsk, Belarus, in 1981. Her family immigrated to the US in 1990. She was educated at University of Massachussets Amherst and New York Academy of Art, where she received her MFA. She lives and works in New York City. She has taught privately, and in several institutions, including the Brookline Center for the Arts and, most recently, the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Her current series of paintings “Desert Places,” she utilizes 17th century oil painting techniques to achieve a range of tonality in which light and shadow, as well as observation and imagination meld concordantly. Like the Robert Frost poem it references, the panels explore the beauty that can be found in nature’s most isolated places. The artist reveals the dichotomy of feeling that affects one in such settings. The joy in experiencing the beauty of a dense wood or open, moonlit plain is tinged with the fear of what the darkness conceals. In these works desolation is a siren that tempts our anxieties about loneliness to surface.  Although fear suffuses the landscapes their beauty is never overshadowed.
